Why Is My Copilot Doing That?! - The Art of Debugging Agents in Copilot Studio

ABOUT THE SESSION
When a Copilot confidently gives the wrong answer, the problem is rarely “the AI.” It’s usually a combination of misunderstood intent, unexpected orchestration paths, incomplete data, or side effects introduced by connectors and Power Automate flows. As Copilot Studio adoption accelerates, the ability to systematically debug agent behavior has become a critical, real-world skill for builders and architects.
In this session, Peter Ruiter (Microsoft MVP, Capgemini) takes a practical, experience-driven look at how Copilot agents actually fail and how to diagnose those failures using tools that exist today. You’ll learn how to analyze topic triggering and fallback behavior, inspect conversation transcripts and test chat traces, and understand how orchestration decisions are made across topics, actions, and generative responses.
The session covers how to use Copilot Studio’s built-in testing capabilities, analytics, and diagnostics alongside Power Automate run history, connector error details, and environment-level monitoring to pinpoint where things go off the rails.
You’ll see concrete patterns for isolating issues, validating assumptions, logging effectively within flows, and reducing nondeterministic behavior caused by ambiguous prompts or overloaded topics. Common failure modes, such as silent connector failures, unintended topic matches, broken variable hand-offs, and generative answers overriding structured logic are broken down with clear remediation strategies.
Attendees will leave with a repeatable debugging checklist, proven troubleshooting techniques they can apply immediately, and a clearer mental model of how Copilot Studio agents execute end-to-end. The goal is simple: fewer “why is it doing that?” moments, faster root-cause analysis, and the confidence to step into any misbehaving Copilot and bring it back under control.
